The University of South Carolina will extend spring break until March 22 and resume classes online on March 23. Classes will resume face-to-face on April 6.
Anna Edwards, associate vice president for Student Life, said the focus is social distancing in order to slow the spread of coronavirus.
A statement released by the university encourages students "not to return to campus from March 16 through April 3," but all residence halls, food services and offices will remain open for those who decide to come back.
However, campus events will be suspended with the exception of intercollegiate athletics competition.
"Some events will be rescheduled and some events will be canceled. That is based on the availability, based on the type of event that it was. Right now we are looking at canceling all university-sponsored events which includes student organization events," Edwards said.
The Daily Gamecock reached out to university spokesperson Jeff Stensland for comment this morning. He has yet to respond.
